Findings of risk assessment studies on The University of the West Indies’ student population indicated the need for an intervention programme to engage the community in HIV/STI risk reduction strategies as well as related health policies. This need brought about the launch of The University Health Centre’s Sexual Safety Initiative on October 4, 2007. The initiative is aimed at empowering students to make informed decisions concerning their sexual safety which includes condom skills, HIV/AIDS information and referral for counselling & testing services.
The Sexual Safety Initiative Programme supports the awareness and implementation of the University of the West Indies’s HIV/AIDS Policy and the Sexual Harassment Policy. These policies aim to build awareness and to establish mechanisms to promote safer sex.
The Sexual Safety Initiative intends to increase avenues for condom distribution as well as improving condom buying habits through establishing and sustaining condom machines.
