Safer Sex Week

SAFER SEX WEEK

Safer Sex Week was first observed in 1994 during the week of Valentine’s Day, a time chosen to amplify awareness of safer sexual practices in light of the anticipated increase in sexual activity during this season of love and intimacy. This observance aligns with the occasion’s focus on relationships, emphasizing the importance of protecting one’s health while fostering meaningful and safe connections. In Jamaica, Safer Sex Week has evolved into an annual event with the overarching goal of promoting safe sexual practices and encouraging open, inclusive conversations about sexual health.

During this week, the HIV/STI/TB Unit (HSTU) of the Ministry of Health and Wellness spearheads various activities designed to educate the population on safer sex practices. Each year, a theme is carefully selected by a committee to guide discussions and activities at the national, regional, and parish levels. Initiatives typically include community outreach sessions, youth-focused social media campaigns, media advertisements, and educational interviews, all aimed at increasing awareness and promoting responsible sexual behaviors.
